Government awards Calderdale Council an additional £2 million following successful innovation bid

Calderdale Council has been awarded over £2 million in additional highways monies by central government following a successful funding bid as part of the Department for Transport’s Local Highways Maintenance Challenge Fund Tranche 2A. Calderdale is one of just 19 local authorities outside of London which have been successful in attracting the funding which will allow a combined total of £95 million worth of investment to go ahead.

Effectively, the monies that the Challenge Fund will provide now allow Calderdale Council to target the worse gulleys across the borough (in terms of ease of maintenance, ability to run etc.) and carry out the necessary improvements either by replacing the older pots (which prevent rodding) or digging down and repairing the blockages.  This means that the Council is not only able to specifically target these monies at problem areas (the principles of good asset management), but are also able to accelerate their overall delivery of a comprehensive drainage programme.

‘It is great news that Calderdale Council has been successful in attracting these additional funds from central government. This is in addition to a multi-million pound package that the Government gives to Calderdale every year to help to maintain our wider road network. This funding will help to improve the overall highway drainage network and will ensure that the Council’s maintenance revenue spend becomes much more cost effective. It will complement the on-going flood resilience work across the Calder Valley and follows the unprecedented investment of over £70 million from the Government for flood-related works here in the Calder Valley,’ said Craig.
