Craig calls for Calderdale Council to introduce free parking in Elland Town Centre

I have written to Cllr Tim Swift, leader of Calderdale Council, to support introducing free parking in Elland Town Centre. The Town Centre in Elland is in need of urgent assistance and investment from the Council and the introduction of free parking needs to act as a catalyst for a long-term strategy from the Council to work with traders, residents, and community groups in Elland to regenerate the town.

A copy of the letter to Cllr Swift is below:

Dear Cllr Swift

I hope that you and Megan are both well and that you managed to have a break over the Easter period.

I understand that the Places Scrutiny Panel met on 15th March and discussed a petition in relation to free parking in Elland Town Centre. As you know, the town centre in Elland is facing a number of challenges and the trading conditions for local businesses are becoming increasingly difficult. Unfortunately, Elland has not received the support, assistance, and investment that other towns have from Calderdale Council in recent years. I strongly feel that Elland Town Centre requires dedicated support and investment from the Council in order to regenerate the town centre and to create an environment that can support the local traders and help to increase investment and footfall.

I’m sure that you will agree with me in relation to the need to support Elland Town Centre and so as an initial first step, may I lend my support to the recommendation of the Scrutiny Panel which has suggested a trial period of free parking in the town for 12 months. I feel that this measure should represent the start of a refreshed and concerted effort from the Council to bring together the different stakeholders in Elland and agree upon an ambitious strategy for regeneration and improvements to the Town Centre. With the investment in a new Railway Station for Elland coming via the Government funded West Yorkshire Combined Authority, now really is the time to consider how the Council can use its influence to put in place a long-term vision for the town.

With best wishes
